JANE’S ADDICTION – Nothing’s Shocking – Warner Bros. Records

Mal wieder stöbern im Plattenregal und geile, alte Scheiße: Perry Farrell’s Jane’s Addiction mit der Nothing’s Shocking LP. Damals klang das alles neu, frisch und anders, ein Mix aus Melodie, Indie, Punk, Provokation oft auch fast schon Metalgitarren. Ein Knackpunkt ist die Stimme, habe ich von vielen gehört, die geht gar nicht (dann wird’s auch nix mit der Platte), ich find die Stimme gut und somit ist es was mit dem Jane’s Addiction Album! Auch heute freue ich mich über die Lieder, klar das Neue ist nicht mehr neu, aber die Substanz des musikalischen Werkes lässt mich geile, alte Scheiße schreiben!

I went to my records and Nothing’s Shocking shouted the loudest „get me out – listen to me“. All right, Jane’s Addiction on the record player. When the LP came out it was all new, exciting, a mix of melody, indie, kind if metal guitars, punk and provocation. Amazing! Quite often I heard that the voice of Perry Farrell was a no-go and then you won’t connect to the band’s output. I like it and I like their stuff! After all these years, the music is not new anymore but it still catches me and makes me write: great old crazy shit!

THE LUCKY PLAYBOYS – Plus d’chance que d‘ l’Esprit / More Luck Than Sense – Ossun Music Company

Was ist denn das? Was für ein Cover, was für eine Aufmachung. The Lucky Playboys sind Rick Benoit (Bass, Gesang), Blake Castille (Gitarre), Kenny Alleman (Schlagzeug, Gesang) Ward Lormand (Akkordeon, T-fer, Gesang) und D’Jalma Garnier (Fiddle, Gesang). Tja und die Musik ist ohhh, keine Ahnung, ich umschreibe es mal, es klingt wie Cowboy-Musik. So auf die Art: du fährst mit der Karre durch die Südstaaten und es ist so eine drückende Hitze. Neben der Landstraße ist der Sumpf und es beschleicht dich das Gefühl dass jetzt ein kühler Drink (hier gibt es Werbeplatz zu kaufen, einfach mir nen Arsch voll Geld überweisen und ich ändere Drink in den Namen für den bezahlt wird) nötig ist. Weit und breit ist aber eigentlich nichts. Da, nach dem Buckel ist eine Baracke in Sicht. Beim Näherkommen stehen sogar einige Pickups da und tata es ist ein Saloon. Hineinspaziert und zu dem Drink spielen The Lucky Playboys auf. Die langhaarige Schönheit sucht den Blick, setzt sich dazu und meint: Cajun, Voodoo und Du!
Alles etwas befremdlich aber OK, wie die CD – plus d’chance que d‘ L’Esprit.

Strange thing here, the Lucky Playboys presenting a CD called plus d’chance que d‘ L’Esprit / more luck than sense. The Lucky Playboys feel lucky to be alive and in Louisiana (so it is written in the inlay) and they are: Kanny Alleman (Drums, Vocals), Rick Benoit (Bass, Vocals), Blake Castille (Guitar), D’Jalma Garnier (Fiddle, Vocals) and Ward Lormand (Accordions, T-fer, Vocals). This is something new for me, kind of cowboy music. How can I describe it? Let me paraphrase it this way: you drive along the road in the Bible belt and there is the swamp, the road and wideness. The heat is getting awkward. You need a cool drink (here the name of your drink could be written, modern advertising, transfer me lots of money and you are in), but no font is in sight. Wow, there on the left is a barrack! While getting there you see it is a saloon and there are even some cars parked before. While sitting at the bar and enjoying the drink The Lucky Playboys starts playing and there the long hair beauty comes up to you saying: hi stranger, Cajun, voodoo you and me!
This is interesting, somehow unfamiliarly but OK, like the CD!

CHAMBERLAIN – Raise It High – Artic Rodeo Recordings

Wieder ein kleines Vinylbaby, dieses hört auf den Namen Raise It High E.P. von Chamberlain, auch hier schlägt der limited pressing Wahn zu: 100 in gold, 100 in weiß und 220 in grün.
Zu hören gibt es auf der A-Seite „Raise It High“, dies ist guter, melodiöser Gitarrenrock. Die B-Seite hat „The South Has Spoiled Me“ und hier sind nicht nur die Chamberlain Jungs am Werk, sondern auch Brian Fallon von The Gaslight Anthem. Eher ein ruhigeres Stück, die Gitarre als Begleitung zu der Stimme von Brian Fallon. Die Band steuert die Backup Vocals bei und dann kommt noch die Mundharmonika ins Spiel.

Limited green Chamberlain vinyl called Raise It High

7“ vinyl from Chamberlain and of course it is a limited pressing: 100 copies on gold vinyl, 100 copies on white and another 220 on green vinyl. The track on the A side is called “Raise It High” and it is a nice melodic guitar rock song. On B side is a tune called “The South Has Spoiled Me” and this one features Brain Fallon of The Gaslight Anthem, nice way to help a band getting pushed. The song is a quite one. Mr. Fallon singing accompanied by a guitar, the band comes in during the chorus and as well a harp.

THE STROKES – Under Cover Of Darkness – RCA

musikexpress Exclusive Vinyl 2011

Comeback 7″ Single nach einigen Jahren und als Limited vinyl edition auch als Beipack im Musikexpress. Ob die Strokes nach dieser Pause noch relevant sind? Waren die Herren jemals relevant? Die Platten sind gut, aber dass die so durch die Decke gegangen sind habe ich nie verstanden. Die A-Seite hat das Lied Under Cover Of Darkness und dieses ist ganz einfach ein Strokes‘ Song. Gitarre, etwas Dreck, gute Struktur und Melodie und dann auch die typische Julian Casablanca’s Stimme: korrekt. Auf der B-Seite dann You’re So Right, das klingt anders! Jetzt wird’s spannend. Irgendwie Elektrosound mit dunklem New Wave Einschlag (was auch immer das sein mag, hehehe) und dann isses auch schon wieder vorbei.

The Strokes are back and a new limited edition 7″ vinyl single comes alone with the music magazin musikexpress. That is a nice goodie – vinyl rules!
Side A has the song Under Cover Of Darkness and it is a typical Strokes‘ song. Guitar, bit of garage, good structure and the voice of Julian Casablanca’s – yes a typical The Strokes‘ song. On the B-side however is You’re So Right and this really pricked up my ears, cause this is different. OK on a single B-side you can experience but still not everybody does it (and I think the song is even on the Angles LP). You’re So Right sound like electro, kind of dark New Wave (and now try to figure out what dark New Wave is, hehehe).

FUGAZI – same – Dischord Records

Fugazi – Dischord Records – Dischord 30 1988

Was soll/kann man zu dieser Platte noch schreiben, die sich da mal wieder auf meinen Plattenspieler gelegt hat?
Als die Fugazi LP damals (1988) erschienen ist: ist ein Killer!!! Und auch heute: Hammer!!! Warum?
Klasse Songs mit ja doch positiver Energie (Waiting Room / Bulldog Front / Bad Moth / Burning / Give Me The Cure / Suggestion / Glue Man), einem Überhit Waiting Room (OK, war damals für die echt Coolen schon zu kommerziell), eine Band (Fugazi) die für den DIY Spirit und alles drumherum steht wie wenig andere Bands (und auch mit Erfolg, es geht doch!), ein Label (Dischord) das wie Musik in den Ohren klingt (kleine Internetaufgabe: wer betreibt das Label?). Irgendwie alles richtig gemacht die Herren Joe Lally, Ian MacKaye, Guy Picciotto and Brendan Canty. Ach ja, dann noch zwei Konzertfotos (1 auf dem Cover, 1 auf der Innenhülle) wo ich einfach nur beeindruckt bin!!!
Na denn, zur Platte gibt es ausser auf jeden Fall mal anhören (und dann haben) nichts mehr zu schreiben, aber jetzt gibt es einen Schwenk aus meinem Leben. Irgendwann vor vielen Jahren haben Fugazi in Stuttgart gespielt (hieß der Laden alte Feuerwache?). Ich war bei meinem damaligen Girl (hallo Fisch) und wir wollten uns mit meinem Bruder treffen (hallo Bruder). Kamen etwas später, also alle zusammen später losgefahren und etwas später angekommen (der werte Bruder war stinkig). In Benztown dann zu dem Laden gekommen, da passten so 200 Leute rein, 300 waren bestimmt drinne und auf dem Platz vorne dran waren dann nochmals so 300 Leuts, schönes Chaos, aber somit leider kein Fugazi-konzert für uns…

Gutes FUGAZI Vinyl auf Dischord Records

What you want to read about this Fugazi record? When it came out (1988) it was a killer and listening to it right now it is still somehow magic. Great songs, a hit (Waiting Room), a band that really stands for DIY punk rock, on a great label (Dischord) and on the cover and on the inlay two concert photos Rock The Cam would kill for… Try to listen to it once and then do yourself something good and buy the LP.
And now a little story about my life and Fugazi, some years ago, I have been at my girl friends place and we wanted to go to the Fugazi show in Stuttgart. Before we wanted to meet my brother and then driving together to the gig, OK we were a bit late and the brother was a bit pissed ,but when we reached the place in Stuttgart there were about 300 people outside, another 300 in a place for 200 and as result of this crowd, some kind of chaos inside and in front of the place. Unfortunately it ment no Fugazi concert that time.

DÖDELHAIE – Hai Alarm!! – Impact Records

Was fällt dem gemeinen Leser zum Thema Dödelhaie ein?
Deutschpunk, vielleicht?
Was verbindet der gemeine Leser mit Deutschpunk?
Tja, entweder gut oder schlecht.
Also neuer Ansatz, beginnen wir mit dem Äußeren:
Schnickes Picture Vinyl, dazu ein Poster, Textbeilage und noch die CD. Gibt mal volle Punk(t)zahl.
Was noch? Machen tun es die Dödelhaie auch schon seit 1985 und auf der Platte gibt es außer den Herren Axel, Andy, Mani, Hardy noch Gäste, nämlich die Eva, die zwei Ex-Daily Terror Leuts Uwe und Micha. Meine Berührung mit den Fischen ist bisher eher gering, durfte mal ein Konzert sehen, was cool war. Also unvoreingenommen ran an die Musik.
Intro und dann kommen schon zwei Nummern die mich positiv erwischen. Klarer Sound, ganz geile Gitarreneinstellung und Punk Rock. „Wir werden uns wohl nicht mehr ändern“, OK. Dann kommt meiner Meinung nach der Schatten, das Molli Lied. Nee, ist gar nicht mein Fall, dann ändern sich die Haie aber wieder und zwar zum Guten, mein Mixkassettentipp: Golf Hooligans! Der Rest der Hai Alarm!! Scheibe lässt sich auch gut anhören und bringt mir Freude. Gute Platte. Und übrigens gut zu wissen: Mandy, Wendy und auch Sandy hatten eine schöne Zeit. Nur auf dem Rücken ihrer Pferde machten sie die Beine breit! Da lernt man noch was aus den Texten, kein Wunder hatte ich damals bei den …ndy-schnitten kein Erfolg.

DÖDELHAIE - Hai Alarm!! Picture Vinyl

Dödelhaie is a weird name and I do not even try to translate it. They exist since 25 years and they are playing Deutschpunk. I was able to catch them once live and the show was cool, so let’s get to the record. Picture vinyl including text sheet, a poster and the CD, it is almost impossible to make the presentation better. The Hai Alarm LP has a good clear sound and I like most of the songs. One is bäh (Molli Lied) and one is my favorite (Golf Hooligans) and the other ones and the epilogs are good time. Put the whole story into a nutshell, I did not expect anything and got positively surprised by this Dödelhaie record!

COMEBACK KID – Symptoms + Cures – Victory Records

Ich muss gestehen ich bin ein Weichei, ich muss gestehen ich habe 5 Versuche gebraucht um die aktuelle Comeback Kid Platte durchzuhören. Ich wollte, doch wenn die Laune nicht passt, ist mir die Symptoms + Cures einfach zu heftig. Doch endlich kann ich mich mit der passenden Muse den neuen Klängen von Comeback Kid hingeben. Und es ist heftig, schön heftig. Immer feste drauf wie damals auch auf dem Konzert im Feierwerk: Moshparts im Hardcoregewitter. Dazwischen gibt es auch leicht an Billy Talent klingende Töne (G. M. Vincent & I + The concept stays). Beim Anhören gewinnt die Platte mit jedem Stück und wird hintenraus immer besser, vielleicht hat sich mein inneres Weichei jetzt auch besser darauf eingestellt? Eine Art 80 er Trash Punk Hardcore Platte mit Schreistimme, was mir nicht ganz so taugt, einfach noch etwas mehr Stimme und weniger Schrei und sau geil wär das! Meine Highlights sind: G. M. Vincent & I und Symptoms + Cures.
Gab es wohl als limitierte Auflage mit 300 Stück weiß mit Rauch und angeblich auch 600 Stück in dunkelblau. So wie ich gesehen habe, jetzt auch in einer Art hellblau und in weiß (800?).

COMEBACK KID - Symptoms + Cures Vinyl Cover

I must confess I’m a wimp and it took me 5 times to get through the new Comeback Kid output Symptoms + Cures. But now the mood was right and the tunes entered my ears. Good hard stuff and I think the record gets better with every song. My personal favourites are G. M. Vincent & I and Symptoms + Cures. A bit more melody in the voice and less shouting and „me wimp“ would like it much more!
Was on coloured vinyl with smoke on it – 300 totally pressed and dark blue with 600 pressed. Just saw that right now there is white and some kind of lighter blue vinyl as well on the market.
